Two upcoming events in my area:

1)      Cairns Indigenous Arts Fair 2014

2)      Cairns Festival 2014

After doing some research on both these events I have discovered it is easier for me to cover the Cairns Indigenous Arts Fair, due to it being held on weekdays where my toddler is in day care.

 

The Cairns festival was also a possibility but due to my husband doing the fireworks for that event, it will be too much to juggle to take the kids with me and tweet and take notes, and to find a babysitter for such a big event will be challenging!

 

 I found finding events for this assessment challenging. I am not located in a big city, and events are either expensive or run at night (Cairns Amateurs-something else hubby will be at fireworks for), or outside of this term. So with those key factors in mind I have decided my best option is to cover the Cairns Indigenous Arts Fair 2014.

It is the premier Indigenous arts fair in Australia and it was established in 2009. It is a 3 day event now held annually, that celebrates the merging of Indigenous and Torres Straight Island art into a larger art market. It is the only art fair to welcome commercial art galleries and Indigenous art centres to sell and display art by Indigenous and Torres Strait islander people.

 

The main parts of this event are the art work on display as well as the visual art performances. Smaller events within it such as children’s workshops are designed to get the public engaged with the event. At this event I will try and obtain a quote from a participant and/or an organiser.

 

 I plan on attending this event on the Friday between 11.30 and 5 to be able to see artwork on display and visual performances, with the possibility of taking our kids and our Japanese home stay students on the Sunday to participate in activities. The events of dancing and art work run all day one act following the other, so capturing the moment should arise often. Access should be fairly easy with parking at the wharf where it will be held.

Dave O’Neils writing on Robert Pattinson

I think the main issues within this poorly written piece is that is contains bad sentence structures and it’s punctuated in all the wrong spots, or with the wrong punctuation.

 I felt it did not flow very well to keep the readers interest ,and it was a bit messy. I can see where Dave O’Neil was trying to put a comical feel to the story, but instead with its lack of structure, it came off as a bit desperate to sound smart and funny.

I think what is good about this well-written media release is that it had a clear introduction containing what, when, where and why.

The paragraphs that followed contained the who and the how. They were short paragraphs that contained direct quotes. The paragraphs also stated the explanations of topics, people and business groups, making the content understandable.

It also had at the end of the release options to source further information and a full schedule of events, allowing media to be able to make contact with appropriate people and be at particular events.

The simple structure of this media release made it easy to read, follow and understand.

Quiz 4 reflections

This week I surprised myself and got 7 out of 10 on the first attempt. I am better at reading and finding errors, such as punctuation and spelling. I decided to take the approach of re-arranging like an equation, and re-arrange the sentence. If when I read it a different way and it made sense, then it was correct. If it did not make sense, then that was the wrong one!
